SP’s Electoral Pragmatism Collides with Congress’s Binary Strategy Over Owaisi

NEW DELHI — The opposition INDIA bloc’s internal strategy has hit a visible roadblock over Uttar Pradesh, with the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) projecting conflicting viewpoints on whether to ally with Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM for the 2027 state elections.

The public divergence underscores a deeper debate within the anti-BJP coalition: whether to enforce strict ideological boundaries or expand regional coalitions to repair the alliance’s momentum following recent electoral losses.

    Internal Friction Over Coalition Architecture

    1. Congress Insists on Strategic Consolidation

The Congress party is pushing a centralized, absolute narrative that rejects any fragmentation of the anti-BJP vote share.

    • The High Command’s Stance: Congress MP Imran Masood made it clear that while the central leadership retains final veto power, the party views third-front dynamics as counterproductive.

    • The Ideological Line: “It will not be possible to oppose communalism on one side and strengthen communalism on the other,” Masood noted, asserting that the political landscape is a direct contest between Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi, leaving no room for a middle path.

    2. Samajwadi Party prioritizes Realpolitik

As the principal opposition force on the ground in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party is favoring immediate arithmetic over ideological screening.

    • Open-Door Realism: Senior SP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav sidestepped ideological purism, indicating that the party is willing to work with any force that helps slice into the ruling party’s base: “Whoever defeats the BJP is welcome.”

    The AIMIM Leverage Play

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has signaled a willingness to integrate his party into a wider anti-BJP front, but he is demanding structural concessions before committing.

    • The Parity Mandate: Owaisi confirmed his readiness to ally but stated that the AIMIM must be treated with “respect and accorded equal status” rather than being relegated to a minor partner.

    • The Numerical Baseline: The tactical shifting follows the 2022 UP Assembly elections, where AIMIM spearheaded the Bhagidari Parivartan Morcha across 94 seats without gaining a legislative foothold, drawing a 0.49% vote share.

    Background: Rebuilding After Multi-State Setbacks

This operational divide surfaced immediately after a closed-door INDIA bloc review meeting in Delhi, called to dissect major defeats across Delhi, Bihar, and West Bengal over the past year.

At the gathering, Rahul Gandhi warned regional heads from the SP, Trinamool Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal that traditional campaign structures are no longer effective due to a compromised political playing field. While Gandhi urged partners to protect the bloc’s unity at all costs, the friction over Owaisi highlights just how difficult maintaining that unified front will be as state-level seat-sharing talks draw closer.
