NEW DELHI — The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has officially commenced physical construction on the 12.377 km Inderlok–Indraprastha corridor. The engineering work kicked off with the initiation of diaphragm wall construction at the Sarai Rohilla station site, in the presence of Smt. Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi.

Designed as a fully underground extension of the Magenta Line (Line-8), the project represents a major engineering and transit expansion through highly congested zones of Central Delhi.

    1. Project Specifications and Network Expansion

The new extension introduces sophisticated transit infrastructure and significantly scales up the capital’s driverless network capacity:

    • Corridor Profile: 12.377 km entirely underground stretch adding 10 new subterranean stations to the DMRC network.

    • The 89-KM Transit Axis: Upon completion, this extension will transform the Magenta Line into the single longest corridor in the Delhi Metro network, spanning roughly 89 kilometers from Botanical Garden to Inderlok.

    • Automation: The entire length of the extended Magenta Line will utilize advanced Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) to support fully driverless train operations.

    2. Multi-Line Interconnectivity Hubs

The strategic value of the Inderlok–Indraprastha corridor lies in its ability to interconnect seven distinct lines of the existing DMRC network, cutting down travel time across the capital:

    Station Hub Connecting Metro Lines
Inderlok Red Line & Green Line
Nabi Karim Existing Magenta Line segment
New Delhi Yellow Line & Orange Line (Airport Express)
    Delhi Gate Violet Line
    Indraprastha Blue Line

    3. Commercial and Landmark Accessibility

The corridor is mapped to offer direct access to several of Delhi’s primary commercial zones, transit terminals, and central administrative structures. The Sarai Rohilla hub will cater to local educational centers, Desh Bandhu Gupta Road, and the Karol Bagh market ecosystem.

Furthermore, commuters will gain direct subterranean access to critical national landmarks and logistics hubs, including:

    • Transit Terminals: New Delhi Railway Station and Sarai Rohilla Railway Station.

    • Administrative & Civic Hubs: Delhi Sachivalaya (Secretariat), Central Vista area, and Kartavya Path.

    • Socio-Cultural Landmarks: India Gate, Arun Jaitley Stadium, and Jhandewalan Mandir.

Currently, DMRC’s work on the priority sections of the Magenta Line expansion remains ongoing. While segments like Janakpuri West to Krishna Park Extn (1.8 km) and Deepali Chowk to Majlis Park (9.9 km) are already operational, the newly initiated Central Vista-aligned corridor will be commissioned in structured phases over the coming years.
