AGARTALA — In a major financial push to modernize the power grid and accelerate clean energy adoption in Northeast India, state-run non-banking financial company (NBFC) REC Limited has finalized two massive agreements totaling ₹15,000 crore with the Government of Tripura.

Signed during the high-profile Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026, the twin agreements are designed to revamp the state’s traditional electricity infrastructure while aggressively building out its green energy footprint.

    1. The Traditional Power Grid Upgrade (₹10,000 Crore)

The largest chunk of the financial package comes via a direct partnership between REC Ltd and the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL). Under this framework, REC Ltd has committed ₹10,000 crore to accelerate critical power generation, transmission, and distribution projects across the state.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Sh. Subhendu Roy (Chief Program Manager, REC Regional Office, Guwahati) and Sh. Biswajit Basu (Managing Director, TSECL) in the presence of Tripura’s Minister of Power, Sh. Ratan Lal Nath. The massive funding injection will target:

    • Strengthening localized transmission lines to minimize distribution losses.

    • Upgrading sub-station infrastructure to support industrial growth.

    • Stabilizing rural electrification grids across complex terrains.

    2. The Clean Energy Injection (₹5,000 Crore)

Parallel to the grid upgrade, REC Ltd sealed a separate green-focused MoU with the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA). The public NBFC has earmarked ₹5,000 crore exclusively to support renewable energy projects, marking one of the most substantial clean energy commitments in the Northeast region.

Executed by REC’s Sh. Subhendu Roy and TREDA Director General (In-charge) Sh. D S Das, the deal establishes a structured pipeline where TREDA will act as the primary facilitator for project implementation, while REC Limited extends comprehensive credit facilities and financial support.

The Strategic Impact: With a combined financial commitment of ₹15,000 crore, this dual-layered investment strategy ensures that Tripura can scale up its solar and clean energy potential without crashing an outdated distribution network—setting a solid blueprint for sustainable infrastructure development in Northeast India.
