“No Drones Needed if Lemons Worked”: CM Fadnavis Slams Superstition

MUMBAI — Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis delivered a sharp-witted critique of “bhondu babas” (fraudulent godmen) in the state assembly, using global analogies to highlight the absurdity of blind faith.

Speaking during a discussion on rape-accused astrologer Ashok Kharat, Fadnavis argued that if black magic were effective, traditional warfare and diplomacy would be obsolete.

    The “Needle vs. Soldier” Analogy

The Chief Minister’s remarks, which drew widespread applause, focused on the practical failures of superstition:

    • On Warfare: “If superstition solved problems, wars would have been fought with lemons and chilis instead of drones.”

    • On Terrorism: He quipped that the state wouldn’t need to send soldiers to the border if terrorists in Pakistan could be defeated “with a needle” from home.

    • On Diplomacy: Fadnavis joked that if these practices worked, figures like Kharat would be advising global leaders like Donald Trump.

    The Case Against Ashok Kharat

The debate follows horrific allegations against the Nashik-based astrologer, including assault, forced abortions, and claims of human sacrifice.

    • Setting a Precedent: Fadnavis called for a punishment that serves as a deterrent for future offenders.

    • Legal Framework: He confirmed that specific rules under the Anti-Superstition Law are being finalized, though current statutes are sufficient for prosecution.

    Faith vs. Blind Faith

Invoking the legacy of reformist saints like Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar, Fadnavis emphasized that while “Maharashtra Dharma” respects faith, it has no room for “bhondugiri” (charlatanism).

“We believe in faith, but intellect is lost when that line is crossed.”
