NEW DELHI – Union Minister Kiren Rijiju issued a sharp rebuttal to Opposition parties on March 31, 2026, asserting that the proposed FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) Amendment Bill is designed solely to safeguard national security and is not a targeted move against any specific group.

Speaking at the BJP headquarters, Rijiju slammed the Congress and Left parties, accusing them of spreading “falsehoods” regarding the legislative changes.

    Key Defense of the Bill

The Minister clarified that the primary objective of the amendment is to regulate the flow of foreign funds and prevent their potential misuse:

    • National Security: The Bill aims to block foreign funding from being used in activities that could compromise India’s security and interests.

    • Neutral Regulation: Rijiju emphasized that the law is intended to check illegal activities and does not target any religious organization.

    • Accountability: The proposed changes seek to ensure that foreign contributions are utilized for their declared purposes, enhancing transparency in the NGO sector.

    Accusations Against the Opposition

Rijiju’s statements come amid a heated political debate, with the Minister claiming:

    • The Opposition is attempting to mislead the public by characterizing the regulation as discriminatory.

    • Claims that the Bill targets specific communities are “false and fabricated.”

The government maintains that these measures are essential for modernizing India’s oversight of foreign inflows, ensuring they align with the country’s legal and security frameworks as it enters the 2026-27 fiscal year.
