NEW DELHI – The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has launched a comprehensive mid-life refurbishment program to upgrade its oldest rolling stock (RS-1). The initiative aims to modernize 70 trains from the Red and Blue Lines that have been in service for 19 to 24 years.
DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar recently inspected the first Phase 3 train before its induction into passenger service. To date, 31 trains have already undergone the upgrade process.
Key Upgrades and Features

Interior & Aesthetics: Complete repainting of passenger areas and driver cabins, alongside extensive repairs to address long-term wear.

Safety Systems: Installation of advanced Fire Detection Systems featuring smoke and heat detectors, and the replacement of old electrical relays and circuit breakers.

Digital Integration: New IP-based Passenger Information Systems, including CCTV surveillance, LCD Dynamic Route Maps, and real-time arrival displays.

Commuter Amenities: For the first time on these older models, mobile and laptop charging points are being installed in all coaches.
Phased Rollout Schedule
The project is divided into three stages, with Phase 1 and 2 currently progressing. The final stage involving 22 Blue Line trains is slated for completion by November 2027. This modernization ensures that the older fleet remains at par with the safety and comfort standards of DMRC’s newest trains.
