KOLKATA – Coal India Limited (CIL) has published its provisional operational performance for April 2026, revealing a mixed landscape across its subsidiaries. While overall production saw a year-on-year decline, key units like South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) recorded growth in critical areas.
The report, filed under SEBI regulations, highlights the state-run miner’s production and dispatch (offtake) trends as it enters the new fiscal year.
Production Performance Overview
Total coal production for the month stood at 56.1 million tonnes (MT), representing a 9.7% decrease compared to the 62.1 MT recorded in April 2025.
-
Top Performer: SECL stood out with a production of 15.3 MT, marking a solid 9.3% growth over the same period last year.
-
Marginal Gains: CCL remained stable with a slight 0.8% increase, producing 6.0 MT.
-
Notable Declines: BCCL and NCL saw significant drops in output, with BCCL production falling by 41.3% and NCL by 23.6%.
Offtake and Dispatch Highlights
The total coal offtake—representing the amount of coal dispatched to consumers—reached 63.2 MT. Although this was a marginal 2.0% decline from the previous year’s 64.5 MT, several subsidiaries performed strongly in ensuring supply.
-
MCL Leadership: MCL achieved a dispatch of 18.1 MT, a 7.2% growth year-on-year.
-
Consistent Supply: ECL and SECL also reported positive offtake growth of 4.6% and 4.1% respectively.
-
Inventory Utilization: The fact that offtake (63.2 MT) exceeded production (56.1 MT) indicates a strategic draw-down of existing coal stocks to meet market demand.
Operational Outlook
The April data reflects the early-year operational dynamics of CIL’s diverse subsidiaries. While certain units faced production headwinds, the growth in offtake for major subsidiaries like MCL and SECL ensures a steady supply of fuel to the power and industrial sectors.
As the fiscal year progresses, the focus is expected to remain on balancing production targets with the logistical requirements of coal dispatch across the national network.
