NEW DELHI — In a major step toward worker welfare and preventive healthcare, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya will launch a nationwide Annual Health Check-Up Initiative on May 7, 2026. Anchored by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), the drive puts the health provisions of the New Labour Codes into immediate action.
The primary launch will take place at the ESIC Medical College & Hospital, Basaidarapur, New Delhi, with simultaneous events held across 11 other ESIC hospitals nationwide.
Implementation of the New Labour Codes
This initiative is a direct result of the transformative reforms under the four New Labour Codes. These codes consolidate 29 central labour laws to simplify compliance and broaden social security.
-
Mandatory Screening: All workers aged 40 years and above are now entitled to a free annual health check-up.
-
Hazardous Operations: For workers dealing with chemicals, toxic substances, or heavy machinery, these medical check-ups are mandatory regardless of age.
-
Preventive Care: The focus is on early diagnosis, long-term health monitoring, and the systematic maintenance of digital health records.
Expanding the Safety Net
Aligned with the “Shramev Jayate” framework, the rollout emphasizes the dignity of labour and strengthened social security. The Code on Social Security, 2020 notably extends these benefits beyond traditional factory workers to include:
-
Unorganized Sector Workers
-
Gig Workers
-
Platform Workers
A Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047
By utilizing ESIC’s extensive network of hospitals, the government aims to create a robust occupational health system. The initiative is seen as a critical pillar in India’s journey toward Viksit Bharat 2047, ensuring that the country’s workforce remains healthy, productive, and socially protected.
The launch will be attended by various State Labour Ministers, Members of Parliament, and other dignitaries, signaling a coordinated federal effort to improve the quality of life for millions of Indian workers.
