NEW DELHI: In a transformative shift for India’s extractive industries, Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) has secured the prestigious Zinc Mark certification for its premier Rampura Agucha Mine. The landmark achievement establishes the facility as the first mine in the country to receive this internationally recognized seal for responsible mineral production.
The Rampura Agucha asset—celebrated globally as the world’s largest underground zinc-lead mining operation—attained the certification after completing a rigorous, independent third-party assessment evaluated under the comprehensive Copper Mark Assurance Framework.
The Zinc Mark Framework Explained
The Zinc Mark operates as a premier international assurance matrix created to audit, verify, and promote responsible manufacturing and mining methods. To earn the certification, HZL’s operations were thoroughly vetted across a spectrum of globally benchmarked Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria:
-
Sourcing Transparency: Ensuring robust, verifiable supply chain traceability and clean metal procurement.
-
Ecological Stewardship: Executing advanced resource management, toxic waste reduction, and strict environmental conservation protocols.
-
Corporate Ethics: Maintaining high standards of governance transparency, workplace safety, and community human rights.
-
Lifecycle Accountability: Advancing circular economy principles and lowering carbon intensity throughout the asset’s operating lifecycle.
End-to-End Certified Production Line
This development arrives on the heels of HZL’s Chanderiya Smelting Complex achieving its own Zinc Mark certification. By successfully certifying both its largest extraction hub and its primary metallurgical processing plant, Hindustan Zinc has constructed India’s first completely certified, responsibly sourced supply chain matrix—guaranteeing compliance from raw ore extraction to finished metal output.
Enhancing Competitiveness in Green Markets
Speaking on the operational milestone, Hindustan Zinc CEO Arun Misra highlighted that evolving international procurement policies are driving unprecedented demand for metals backed by sustainable manufacturing origins. The certification boosts HZL’s market position across several highly demanding sectors:
-
Clean Technology: Supporting the expansion of solar and wind energy infrastructure with low-carbon structural components.
-
Automotive & Advanced Electronics: Providing certified, ethically mined inputs for automotive body panels, precision circuitry, and next-generation battery components.
-
Infrastructure Galvanization: Supplying eco-compliant corrosion protection for major national highways, high-speed rail lines, and coastal infrastructure projects.
Progress Toward Net-Zero Objectives
Hindustan Zinc, a core subsidiary of the Vedanta Group, has continuously accelerated its green transition targets. The company was recently named the world’s most sustainable metals and mining corporation in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment, a top spot it has maintained for three successive years.
As the first Indian corporate entity inducted into the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), HZL is working toward a hard target of achieving net-zero operational emissions by 2050 or earlier. The company’s sustainable portfolio includes EcoZen, Asia’s premier low-carbon zinc brand, alongside maintaining a certified 3.32 times water-positive operational footprint.
