NEW DELHI: Addressing infrastructure maintenance and execution timelines ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari chaired a series of comprehensive review meetings on Monday. The sessions focused heavily on the quality, safety, and maintenance status of National Highway (NH) corridors across Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
The high-level reviews, convened in New Delhi, were sparked by real-time public feedback and performance inputs tracked via media and social media platforms. The meetings saw the participation of Union Ministers of State Shri Ajay Tamta and Shri Harsh Malhotra, alongside senior leadership from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and key project contractors.
Scale of the Regional Infrastructure Review
The dual-state review covered a vast network of crucial transit corridors, focusing on structural durability and commuter safety:

Rajasthan Corridor Assessment: The Minister audited the quality, upkeep, and expanding capacity of 10,000+ km of National Highways intersecting the desert state, prioritizing major freight routes and industrial corridors.

Himachal Pradesh Mountain Logistics: The review evaluated the maintenance and execution progress of 1,947 km of National Highways across the ecologically sensitive and topographically challenging Himalayan terrain.
Adoption of Advanced Engineering and Durability Standards
During the interactions, Shri Gadkari directed contractors and state officials to completely eliminate bureaucratic delays and strictly enforce modern engineering baselines:

Mandatory Monsoon Preparedness Matrix
With the monsoon season approaching, the Union Minister issued strict, non-negotiable directives to MoRTH and NHAI engineers to fortify highways against heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides.
For mountain highway segments—particularly across Himachal Pradesh—contractors must deploy advanced slope stabilization engineering, install heavy geo-textiles, and set up proactive preventive maintenance protocols along fragile hill cutouts.
Additionally, across both states, regional divisions are mandated to immediately clear and reinforce arterial drainage networks to stop water logging on the tarmac. Specialized rapid-response hubs equipped with heavy earth-moving machinery must be positioned near identified vulnerable bottlenecks to swiftly clear debris, minimize transit disruptions, and ensure long-term asset durability.
