MUMBAI – State-run energy major GAIL (India) Limited has announced a significant expansion into the renewable energy sector, with its board approving a ₹3,294.86 crore investment for a 600 MW greenfield solar power project in Uttar Pradesh.

The project, which represents one of GAIL’s largest forays into clean energy to date, will include a 550 MWh co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to ensure grid stability and reliable power supply. Currently operating with a modest solar capacity of approximately 29 MW, this new initiative will exponentially scale the company’s renewable portfolio.

    Key Project Highlights

    • Total Investment: ₹3,294.86 crore (inclusive of taxes and IDC).

    • Capacity: 600 MW Solar Plant + 550 MWh Battery Storage.

    • Execution Timeline: Completion expected within 15 months of the EPC contract award.

    • Financing: The project will be funded through a strategic mix of debt and equity.

    Strategic Energy Transition

The approval, granted during a board meeting on April 13, aligns with GAIL’s long-term strategy to diversify beyond its core natural gas business and support India’s national renewable energy targets. The company has informed the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE Limited of the development in compliance with SEBI (LODR) Regulations. By integrating large-scale battery storage, GAIL aims to position itself as a key player in the country’s evolving green energy infrastructure.
