NEW DELHI — In a major technological leap for India’s rural logistics network, the Ministry of Communications has officially launched a drone-based mail and parcel transmission service under the Department of Posts.
Announced by Union Minister of Communications and DoNER, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the high-tech delivery service was operationalized between Mandi Head Post Office and Rehardhar Branch Post Office in Himachal Pradesh, effective June 12, 2026.
Overcoming Mountain Terrain: 2 Hours to 7 Minutes
The pilot route in the difficult mountainous terrain of Himachal Pradesh showcases a drastic reduction in transit times, demonstrating how unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can bypass challenging Himalayan geography:
| Route Metrics | Conventional Postal Transport | Drone-Based Transmission |
| Distance Covered | ~12 Kilometers | ~12 Kilometers (Direct Flight) |
| Transit Time | Over 2 Hours | Just 7 Minutes |
| Operational Impact | Delayed by terrain/road blocks | Real-time tracking & zero-emission flight |
The initiative stemmed directly from ground-level feedback gathered during Minister Scindia’s interactions with Gramin Dak Sevaks (rural postal workers) and Postal Assistants, who highlighted the severe logistical bottlenecks caused by traditional transport in landslide-prone and remote hill sectors.
Scaled Roadmap: 150 Routes Across Himachal and Assam
The Mandi-Rehardhar flight marks only the first phase of a nationwide tech-integration blueprint designed to foster socio-economic inclusion in India’s most isolated regions.
-
Immediate Expansion: The Department of Posts has finalized plans to deploy drone-based mail transmission across 150 identified routes over the next two to three months.
-
Geographic Targets: Phase 1 scaling will focus exclusively on the rugged terrains of Himachal Pradesh and the flood-prone, remote networks of Assam.
-
Strategic Deliverables: Beyond speed, the drone network introduces automated real-time tracking systems for secure parcel delivery and establishes an environmentally sustainable, carbon-neutral logistics alternative to fossil-fuel-dependent mountain transport.
