EVIAN (FRANCE) — On the sidelines of the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and US President Donald J. Trump held a high-level bilateral meeting to review major global security milestones and lock down the next phase of the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

The dialogue underscored a strong alignment on international energy corridors, expanding defense ties, and finalizing a major commercial agreement.

Endorsing Middle East Peace and Maritime Choke-Point Security

The conversation opened with a heavy focus on global economic stabilization, particularly regarding volatile trade routes and energy supply lines:

    • Conflict Resolution: Prime Minister Modi commended President Trump for his recent diplomatic breakthroughs that led to an understanding aimed at ending the conflict in West Asia, a move seen as vital for global market predictability.

    • Strait of Hormuz: PM Modi reinforced India’s economic stakes in maritime security, emphasizing the need for unhindered freedom of navigation and commerce in the Strait of Hormuz.

    • Protecting Seafarers: The Prime Minister placed special emphasis on the safety of international seafarers, who have faced heightened risks along critical global shipping lanes.

    Progress Report: The COMPACT Architecture

The leaders conducted a thorough audit of the India–U.S. COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology). Since its inception during their Washington D.C. summit in February 2025, the specialized framework has significantly accelerated joint ventures across:

    • Defense Co-Production and military interoperability.

    • Strategic Technologies and critical semiconductor supply chain resilience.

    • Bilateral Trade and next-generation clean energy transitions.

US Trade Representative Bound for New Delhi

To capitalize on the momentum of the COMPACT review, Modi and Trump directed their respective teams to rapidly conclude negotiations on a highly anticipated market-access deal:

    • Interim Bilateral Trade Agreement: Both sides noted with satisfaction that text-level negotiations are entering their final stages to deliver a balanced, commercially meaningful pact.

    • Next Week’s Deadline: To hammer out the remaining tariff and investment chapters, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will visit India next week for direct, official-level negotiations.
