NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed delight and national pride following the official inscription of the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh onto the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The landmark decision was announced during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Busan, South Korea, establishing Sarnath as India’s 45th World Heritage Site.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the recognition celebrates India’s deep civilisational and spiritual heritage, noting Sarnath’s central role in the life and teachings of Lord Buddha.

• Heritage Ensemble: The recognized serial property covers key historic structures including the Chaukhandi Stupa and the Archaeological Remains of Sarnath (featuring the Dhamekh Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa, Mulagandhakuti Vihara, and the Ashokan Pillar whose Lion Capital serves as India’s National Emblem).
