NEW DELHI — In a major push toward critical mineral self-reliance and high-tech manufacturing, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has received 20 bids under its global tender for setting up integrated Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnet (REPM) manufacturing facilities in India.
The robust response follows the Union Cabinet’s approval of the ₹7,280 Crore REPM Scheme, designed to build an indigenous end-to-end value chain—from NdPr oxide processing to finished, high-strength magnets.
Key Highlights of the REPM Initiative
-
Capacity Target: Aims to establish a total domestic production capacity of 6,000 Metric Tons Per Annum (MTPA) of integrated REPM facilities.
-
Beneficiary Allocation: Up to 5 beneficiaries will be selected through competitive bidding, with each allotted a capacity cap of 1,200 MTPA.
-
Timeline & Gestation: Spans 7 years, comprising a 2-year setup phase followed by 5 years of incentive disbursements tied to magnet sales.
-
Strategic Applications: Sintered NdFeB magnets are critical components in electric vehicles (EVs), wind energy turbines, defense technology, aerospace, and advanced electronics.
