Modi Leads Tributes on Partition Horrors Day, Calls Resilience Inspiration for ‘Viksit Bharat’

NEW DELHI — Leading the nation in solemn remembrance on the eve of Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the millions affected by the 1947 Partition, honoring the extraordinary resilience of victims while framing the tragedy as a permanent reminder to safeguard national unity.

PM Modi was joined by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, an annual observance dedicated to remembering the displacement, suffering, and loss of life that accompanied the end of British rule.

Honor for Survivors and the Drive for Growth

In a message to the nation, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that while the events of 1947 shattered countless lives, the strength demonstrated by uprooted families remains a defining chapter of Indian perseverance.

“Today we mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. We recall the courage of all those who were impacted by Partition. It was a moment in history that tore apart several lives… families were uprooted, loved ones were lost, and immense suffering was endured,” PM Modi stated. He noted that survivors rebuilt their lives from nothing to drive the country forward, adding that their journeys should deepen the collective resolve for harmony and brotherhood as India pursues its goal of a Viksit Bharat.

The remembrance day, officially designated by the Modi administration in 2021, formally embeds the memory of one of history’s largest mass migrations into the national calendar ahead of August 15 celebrations.

    Historical Lessons and Political Imperatives

The commemoration also carried sharp political and educational reflections from senior leadership regarding the legacy of 1947:

    • Critique of Historical Leadership: Home Minister Amit Shah referred to August 14, 1947, as one of history’s “most brutal chapters.” Attributing the partition directly to the Indian National Congress, Shah stated that educating the youth about the tragedy is essential to preventing future internal divisions and building Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.

    • A Human Catastrophe: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stressed that Partition was far more than a spatial division, describing it as a devastating rupture of family ties and human relationships. He urged citizens to let the memory of the victims inspire an unyielding commitment to an indivisible India.

By bringing the human toll of Partition back into focus, the Prime Minister and top political leaders highlighted a dual imperative: recognizing the immense sacrifices behind Indian independence while reinforcing the crucial need for national cohesion today.
