NEW DELHI — India and Algeria have formally agreed to expand their military and industrial partnership following the inaugural Joint Commission meeting held in New Delhi on May 5, 2026. This milestone meeting signals a deepening of strategic ties between the two nations, building on the momentum of the 2024 Defence MoU.

    Key Areas of Cooperation

The high-level discussions, co-chaired by Shri Amitabh Prasad (Joint Secretary, International Cooperation) and Maj Gen Kaid Nour Eddine (Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces, Algeria), focused on several critical pillars:

    • Military Training & Exercises: Enhancing interoperability between the armed forces.

    • Defence Industries: Exploring joint production and procurement opportunities.

    • Medical Cooperation: Collaboration between the Armed Forces Medical Services of both nations.

    Establishment of a Strategic Framework

A significant outcome of the meeting was the signing of the Rules of Procedure. This document will serve as the official guiding framework for future Joint Commission meetings and will oversee the practical implementation of all bilateral defence activities.

    A Growing Partnership

The meeting saw participation from a diverse Indian delegation, including representatives from:

    • The Army, Navy, and Air Force

    • DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation)

    • Department of Defence Production

    • Ministry of External Affairs

    Tribute and Industrial Engagement

Before the commencement of the talks, Maj Gen Kaid Nour Eddine visited the National War Memorial to lay a wreath and pay homage to India’s fallen heroes. As part of the visit, the Algerian delegation is also scheduled to interact with key players in India’s defence manufacturing sector to explore industrial synergies.

This inaugural meeting reinforces a mutual commitment to regional security and marks a pivotal step in elevating the India-Algeria relationship from diplomatic cooperation to a robust strategic defence partnership.
