NEW DELHI – Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, announced today that India will host the inaugural International Big Cat Summit in New Delhi on June 1 and 2, 2026.
Speaking at a CII conference, the Minister urged industry leaders to actively participate in the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)—a landmark initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protect the world’s seven major big cats: tiger, lion, cheetah, leopard, snow leopard, jaguar, and puma.
The Case for Corporate Partnership
Shri Yadav emphasized that the private sector’s involvement is vital for the long-term survival of these apex predators.
-
Funding Priorities: Corporate support is specifically needed for habitat restoration, technology-driven surveillance, and community-based conservation.
-
The “Umbrella Species” Concept: The Minister noted that saving big cats ensures the protection of entire landscapes, biodiversity, and critical water resources.
-
Existing Ties: He highlighted that the CII already holds a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the IBCA to facilitate these partnerships.
India’s Green Energy Milestones
Beyond conservation, the Minister shared significant updates on India’s climate goals and economic trajectory:
-
Solar Surge: India’s cumulative solar capacity reached 150 GW as of March 2026, a massive leap from 2.82 GW in 2014.
-
Clean Energy Target: Approximately 50% of India’s installed electricity capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources, achieving the 2030 target well ahead of schedule.
-
Emissions Reduction: India has reduced its GDP emissions intensity by over 37% (2005–2020 levels) while maintaining low per capita emissions.
Vision for India@100
Looking toward 2047, Shri Yadav described the current global landscape not as an “era of change,” but as a “change of era” defined by AI, green technology, and shifting geopolitics. He outlined the pillars of India@100 as sustainable development, economic transformation, and social inclusion, positioning India as a global leader that balances rapid growth with environmental responsibility.
