NEW DELHI: In a major push to redefine their long-standing bilateral ties, India and South Africa have formally agreed to elevate their science and technology partnership into an innovation-driven, industrial alliance. The two nations will shift focus toward future-ready domains, centering their next phase of engagement on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Public Infrastructure, and Advanced Manufacturing to deliver scalable economic and societal impacts.

The strategic roadmap was finalized during a high-profile bilateral meeting held at Kartavya Bhawan in New Delhi between Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh and a South African delegation led by Dr. Nomalungelo Gina, the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Shift from Academic Research to Industrial Innovation

Acknowledging that the two countries have co-funded nearly 150 research projects across diverse scientific disciplines since signing their bilateral agreement in 1995, leadership from both sides emphasized that the partnership must now transition toward market deployment.

    • Sovereign Collaboration Goals: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that future cooperation must transcend traditional academic research. Instead, it should bridge the gap between research institutions, innovation agencies, startups, and industries to create employment and commercialize technologies.

    • Leveraging Complementary Strengths: The leaders highlighted that India and South Africa possess unique, complementary capabilities that can be harnessed to engineer affordable, inclusive, and scalable technological solutions specifically tailored for the developing world.

    • Voices of the Global South: As prominent democratic voices of the Global South, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to shaping international conversations on science, technology, and innovation across global platforms like BRICS, IBSA, G20, and IORA.

    Core Strategic Focus Areas

The bilateral discussions mapped out actionable expansion plans across several high-priority technological and industrial verticals:

Technology Vertical Key Priority Initiatives & Sectors
Emerging Tech & Infrastructure Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Technologies, Cyber-Physical Systems, and Digital Public Infrastructure.
Manufacturing & Materials Advanced Materials, Geospatial Technologies, and Advanced Manufacturing.
Biotech & Healthcare Genomics, vaccine development, pandemic preparedness, and affordable healthcare innovations.
Clean Energy Hydrogen technologies and renewable energy systems.

South Africa expressed a deep institutional interest in tapping into India’s rapidly growing startup-led innovation ecosystem to accelerate its own domestic skills development and technical capabilities.

Flagship Astronomical Ventures and Multilateral Forums

The ministers also reviewed their flagship collaboration in astronomy, paying special attention to the ongoing Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. Dr. Singh characterized the SKA project as one of the most ambitious scientific endeavors of the century, citing its immense potential to drive advanced computing capabilities, deep scientific discovery, and global human resource development.

Looking ahead to upcoming multilateral engagements, India extended a formal invitation to South Africa for active participation in the BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation Ministerial Meeting, scheduled to take place in Chennai in August 2026. The summit will focus on collaborative research in high-performance computing, precision agriculture, and water resources. In return, the South African delegation invited India to participate in the Science Forum South Africa 2026, cementing a continuous loop of high-level scientific and institutional exchange.
