Mysuru | April 10, 2026 — BEML Limited, a premier Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence, has reached a major technological milestone with the unveiling of India’s first indigenous 35-ton Electric Dump Truck. The vehicle was officially flagged off today at BEML’s Mysuru Complex by Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Shri Shantanu Roy.
This launch signals a transformative shift in the Indian mining sector, aligning with national ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) commitments and the push for carbon neutrality.
Advanced Engineering & Efficiency
The electric dump truck is engineered to replace traditional diesel-guzzling heavy machinery with a high-performance, zero-emission alternative.
-
Power and Payload: Driven by a high-efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), the truck handles a 35-ton payload with a gross vehicle weight of nearly 60 tons.
-
Energy Recovery: Equipped with a Regenerative Braking System (RBS), the vehicle recovers energy during downhill travel and braking, contributing to an overall energy efficiency of 85–90%.
-
Battery Technology: A 300 kWh lithium-ion battery powers the unit, supported by a liquid-cooled Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) to ensure safety in extreme mining temperatures.
-
Rapid Charging: The system supports scalable charging infrastructure, capable of reaching an 80% charge in 60 to 90 minutes.
The Economic Value Proposition
Beyond its environmental impact, BEML’s electric platform offers significant cost advantages for mining operators:
-
Energy Savings: Up to 60–70% reduction in energy costs compared to diesel.
-
Operational Costs: An overall reduction of 40–60% in operating expenses due to fewer mechanical parts and lower maintenance needs.
-
Payback Period: Depending on usage intensity, the truck is estimated to pay for itself within one to two years.
Strategic Importance
CMD Shantanu Roy described the launch as a “defining moment” for BEML and the Indian industry. By indigenizing the design and production of electric heavy-duty vehicles, BEML is reducing reliance on imports and setting a new global standard for sustainable mining.
Built with IP67/IP68-rated electrical systems and integrated fire protection, the truck is designed to withstand the harshest environments while ensuring operator safety and zero tailpipe emissions.
