NEW DELHI — Central universities find themselves at the center of a escalating national debate after Delhi University (DU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) circulated official advisories warning students against participating in public demonstrations at Jantar Mantar.

The administrative actions have drawn immediate and sharp pushback from political figures and prominent voices, led by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who condemned the measures as an attempt to undermine democratic freedoms.

    Campus Directives & Institutional Guidelines

The official advisories issued by major central institutions urge students to stay away from political rallies, emphasizing personal safety and legal compliance:

    • Delhi University Warning: DU urged students to avoid gatherings at Jantar Mantar, cautioning that participation in unregulated assemblies could lead to legal action, safety hazards, and long-term damage to their academic and professional careers.

    • JNU Advisory & Social Media Rules: JNU advised its academic community to act responsibly, align with judicial precedents regarding public gatherings, and maintain restraint on social media or face disciplinary action under university conduct codes.

    • IIT Campus Guidelines: Similar policies faced scrutiny at IIT Roorkee—which clarified that its stance on political neutrality is an annual conduct protocol—and IIT Madras, where students were reportedly asked to take down protest-related social media content.

    Political & Public Response

The advisories have ignited widespread condemnation from lawmakers and civil rights advocates who argue that universities are curbing free expression:

    • Opposition Challenge: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticized the university notices on social media, questioning the authority of administrations to threaten students for exercising democratic rights and warning officials of future accountability.

    • Legal Concerns Raised: Congress MP Deepender Hooda strongly condemned DU’s statement, disputing the university’s characterization of gatherings at Jantar Mantar as blanket “unlawful assemblies.”

    • Civil Society Criticism: Cultural figures including actor-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt spoke out against the directives, arguing that suppressing student expression poses a far greater risk to their future than active civic engagement.
