Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, conducted a comprehensive progress review of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bibinagar in Hyderabad.

The project, established under Phase-VII of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in 2019, commenced its main construction footprint in June 2022 with a total sanctioned budget of ₹1,110.55 crore.

    National Healthcare Context & Expansion

During the review, the Union Health Minister highlighted the rapid scale-up of tertiary and primary healthcare networks across India over the last few decades:

    • AIIMS Network Growth: Expanded from just 1 operational AIIMS at the close of the 20th century to 23 institutions nationwide. Currently, 18 AIIMS are fully operational, with the remainder in various structural phases.

    • Medical Education Capacity: The total number of medical colleges in India has risen from 387 in 2014 to 820.

    • Primary & Secondary Tier Strengthening: 1.85 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are now functional, catering to an estimated 1.5 billion people under an integrated tier-based framework.

    AIIMS Bibinagar: Current Functional Milestones

The physical progress of the project stands at 87.4% completion, representing an expenditure of approximately ₹902 crore. Major built environments like the Academic Block, AYUSH Building, Amrut Nivas, and UG/PG hostels are fully constructed, while the Radiotherapy and Operation Theatre complexes are near finalization.

    Sector Metric / Status
Patient Footfall ~1,800 outpatients daily across major specialities.
Inpatient Capacity 250 beds currently operational; Emergency medical services active.
Human Resources 132 Faculty Members and 133 Senior Residents.
Academic Batches 902 total students. 2 MBBS batches completed; B.Sc Nursing started (2024); PG programs active across 24 MD and 5 DM/MCh specialities.
Research & Innovation ₹64 crore secured across 129 projects; 1,156 publications. Collaborating with DRDO on the carbon-impregnated ‘ADIDOC’ leg prosthesis.
Digital & Health Schemes ~90% of patients registered under Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). Active teleconsultation via e-Sanjeevani across all 33 Telangana districts.

    Key Operational Directives Issued

To optimize institutional efficiency and address current operational gaps, the Health Minister issued specific directives to the management:

    • Human Resource Stabilization: Emphasized a push for recruiting senior residents and expanding their clinical opportunities. To bypass faculty shortages, the Standing Selection Committee was advised to meet at least four times a year.

    • Inter-Institutional Collaboration: Suggested launching faculty exchange programs with older, established AIIMS campuses alongside hiring visiting expert faculty.

    • Sustainability: Stressed the immediate implementation and optimization of non-renewable and renewable energy mixes across the campus layout.
