NEW DELHI: Emphasizing India’s traditional philosophy of environmental stewardship, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam (wise saying) on Monday. He highlighted that achieving the collective welfare of all living beings by maintaining a precise balance with nature remains the foundational spirit of Indian civilization.
The Prime Minister noted that this holistic, nature-centric vision is driving India’s modern infrastructure and economic development programs, ensuring that national progress is achieved sustainably without causing environmental harm.
The Sacred Verse and Its Philosophy
Taking to social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi shared the specific scriptural verse to underline the civilizational duty of preserving natural ecosystems:
“प्रकृति के साथ संतुलन बिठाकर समस्त जीवों का कल्याण हो, यही हमारी संस्कृति की मूल भावना रही है। इसी व्यापक दृष्टि से आज भारतवर्ष प्रगति और समृद्धि के पथ पर निरंतर आगे बढ़ रहा है।
यावच्चतस्रः प्रदिशश्चक्षुर्यावत् समश्नुते। तावत् समैत्विन्द्रियं मयि तद्धस्तिवर्चसम्॥”
The verse translates into a profound invocation for sustainable expansion and shared well-being:
“May we attain such prosperity that is endowed with the vast expanse of all four directions and the alert awareness of the eyes’ vision – where, living in complete harmony with nature, the environment is preserved and the sustainable well-being of all life is ensured.”
The Civilizational Standard: Rather than viewing progress and environmental protection as conflicting goals, the ancient text positions true prosperity as something that can only exist when human expansion is visually and ethically aligned with the preservation of surrounding ecosystems.
Aligning Tradition with Modern Policy
The Prime Minister’s emphasis on ecological harmony comes at a time when the government is pushing major green initiatives on the global stage.
By grounding modern climate action and clean-energy transitions in traditional heritage, the administration seeks to project India’s sustainability roadmap—such as the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) movement and green energy expansions—not merely as regulatory compliances, but as a continuation of its core cultural values.
