NEW DELHI — In a major infrastructure push, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to visit Punjab on Friday, July 17, 2026, to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹2,500 crore.

The upcoming visit will primarily center on upgrading northern India’s healthcare capacity and boosting regional rail connectivity, signaling significant federal capital investment in the state.

    A ₹1,200-Crore Boost for Healthcare

Out of the total package, approximately ₹1,200 crore has been earmarked to enhance medical infrastructure, advanced research, and clinical education in the region. The major healthcare rollouts include:

    • Advanced Mother and Child Centre (PGIMER): A dedicated facility built to expand the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research’s capacity, enabling it to manage more than 6,000 high-risk deliveries every year.

    • Advanced Neurosciences Centre (PGIMER): Designed to offer highly specialized treatment for neurological disorders, significantly reducing waiting times for critical patients.

    • Ayushman Bharat Infrastructure Expansion: PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for a new 150-bed critical care hospital block to strengthen emergency medical response.

Expanding Rail Networks and Modernizing Stations

The Prime Minister’s visit will also mark a major milestone for Punjab’s transit infrastructure and religious tourism routes.

    • Sant Ravidas Express: A new tri-weekly train service will be flagged off from Chheharta in Amritsar to Varanasi. Operating on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, the service is designed to facilitate travel for thousands of devotees visiting the Guru Ravidass Janam Asthan Temple ahead of his 650th birth anniversary next year.

    • Amrit Bharat Station Scheme: In Jalandhar, the PM will kick off the redevelopment of 75 railway stations across India. Among the selected sites is the historic, British-era Jalandhar Cantonment railway station, which is scheduled for a comprehensive modern upgrade.

Political Context: Beyond the development projects, political observers are closely watching the visit. This marks the Prime Minister’s first trip to Punjab after the BJP announced its strategy to contest future elections in the state independently.
