PM Narendra Modi Shares Sanskrit Verse on Humility and Public Welfare

NEW DELHI — Emphasizing the traditional Indian values that govern leadership and societal growth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a classical Sanskrit Subhashitam (aphorism) to highlight how success and prosperity must always coexist with humility and selfless public service.

The Prime Minister observed that individual or national achievements gain true meaning only when they are directed toward the collective welfare (Lokkalyan) and the upliftment of society.

The Sanskrit Aphorism and Its Literary Meaning

The Prime Minister shared the following verse from traditional Sanskrit literature, which uses elements of nature to illustrate human virtues:

    $$\text{भवन्ति नम्रास्तरवः फलोद्गमैर्नवाम्बुभि-र्दूर-विलम्बिनो घनाः।}$$
    $$\text{अनुद्धताः सत्पुरुषाः समृद्धिभिः स्वभाव एवैष परोपकारिणाम्॥}$$

    The Natural Analogy of Virtue:

The Subhashitam draws a parallel between the physical transformations in the natural world and the internal character of noble individuals:

    • The Fruit-Bearing Trees: Just as trees naturally bend low toward the earth when they are laden with a rich harvest of fruit, making it easier for others to reach.

    • The Rain-Bearing Clouds: Just as dense storm clouds hang low as they fill with fresh water, preparing to shower rain upon the parched ground below.

    • The Virtuous Leader: In the exact same manner, truly noble, benevolent, and evolved individuals (Satpurushas) remain deeply humble and approachable when they attain wealth, authority, or global fame.

The verse concludes that this absence of pride (Anuddhatāḥ) and instinctive drive toward charity is the innate, unalterable nature (Swabhav) of those dedicated to the welfare of others (Paropkarinam).

    Reaffirming the Spirit of Governance

Reflecting on the core philosophy behind the verse on social media platform X, the Prime Minister contextualized how ancient wisdom guides modern public duty and state governance:

    "समृद्धि की शोभा विनम्रता और परोपकार में निहित है। सफलता वही सार्थक है, जिसमें लोककल्याण की भावना सर्वोपरि हो।"

The Prime Minister’s commentary highlights a foundational socio-cultural framework: true prosperity is measured not by accumulation, but by distribution, and real success lies in channeling resources to empower the most vulnerable sections of society.
