NEW DELHI — In a major push to democratize digital healthcare, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, officially launched Aarogya Setu 2.0.
Originally built as a pandemic contact-tracing tool by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the platform has been formally handed over to the National Health Authority (NHA). It has undergone a comprehensive structural overhaul, shifting from a crisis-response utility into India’s primary citizen-facing Personal Health Record (PHR) portal under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
Strategic Shift to Everyday Healthcare
Leveraging a massive, pre-existing user base of nearly 20 crore downloads, Aarogya Setu 2.0 addresses the digital health ecosystem’s biggest hurdle: citizen awareness and onboarding. By transforming this familiar app into a centralized, trusted gateway, the government aims to mainstream ABDM building blocks—like the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA)—into regular medical workflows.
Key Core Features of Aarogya Setu 2.0
The upgraded 2.0 ecosystem introduces cutting-edge automation, health tracking, and insurance wallet management directly to the user’s smartphone:
-
AI-Powered Medical Digitization: Users can upload physical lab reports, prescriptions, or diagnostics as PDFs or images. The app uses built-in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to extract and digitize text, automatically plotting the data into a personalized health history dashboard.
-
Integrated Vitals & Wearable Syncing: Syncs smoothly with fitness bands and smartwatches to track daily step counts, calorie burn, heart rates, and blood glucose levels. It features medication reminders, custom goal tracking, and health metrics monitoring.
-
Unified Welfare Wallets:
-
PM-JAY Wallet: Gives beneficiaries a transparent overview of their Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana coverage, detailing total balances, utilized amounts, and family-wise consumption limits.
-
CAPF & Private Portals: Displays policy parameters for Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel alongside separate dashboards to track private health insurance wallet balances and claims.
-
-
Locational Emergency Services: Uses GPS tracking to locate nearby diagnostic centers, clinics, and doctors within a customizable 5 to 50 km radius. It features direct ambulance booking and real-time blood unit availability tracking through integration with e-RaktKosh.
-
Scan & Share Registration: Uses custom QR profile sharing to eliminate long queues at hospital registration desks, enabling instant digital check-ins, payments, and record transfers.
Data Privacy and Family Governance
To simplify access for multi-generational households, the app introduces Family Management, allowing a primary user to manage profiles for children, spouses, and elderly parents under a single account without separate logins.
Importantly, the framework complies with India’s stringent digital health privacy standards through the My Consent dashboard. This feature gives users absolute control over their sensitive medical data, enabling them to track, grant, deny, or revoke data-sharing permissions with healthcare providers in real time.
