NEW DELHI — Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has defended the Centre’s handling of the competitive examination paper leak controversy, emphasizing that prompt administrative actions—including re-examinations, arrests, and institutional overhauls—have mitigated disruptions for affected aspirants.

Speaking in an interview with ANI, Sitharaman noted that despite the initial distress caused by the leaks, many students utilized the re-examination window to enhance their preparation and secure admission into higher education institutions.

    Key Remarks & Government Defense

Addressing ongoing demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and criticisms from opposition parties, the Finance Minister highlighted the speed and scope of the government’s intervention:

    • Perspective on Aspirants’ Performance: Sitharaman observed that several young candidates adapted to the setback, stating that swift re-examinations allowed students to improve their scores and stay on track with their academic timelines.

    • Dismissal of Opposition Criticism: She argued that claims of administrative inaction are baseless, pointing to direct interventions by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the setup of dedicated fast-track courts, and early arrests of individuals involved in buying and selling question papers.

    • Commitment to Accountability: Reaffirming the government’s zero-tolerance stance, Sitharaman promised strict legal consequences for those who “violated the sacredness” of national examinations.

    Ongoing Institutional Restructuring & Protests

While political leadership maintains that the Union Government has acted decisively, public demonstrations regarding examination integrity continue:

    • NTA Overhaul: The Centre has initiated a comprehensive structural review of the National Testing Agency (NTA), which includes the recent removal of 47 officials and the replacement of key administrative personnel.

    • Persistent Demonstrations: Despite official assurances and ongoing dialogue with ministerial representatives, student groups and protesters continue to push for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

    • Government Position on Leadership: Government sources affirmed that a ministerial resignation is not under consideration, reiterating that the administration remains unified behind current leadership while focusing on structural and legislative reforms.
