NEW DELHI — On the heels of India’s stellar 7.8% GDP expansion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a direct appeal to citizens to curb foreign expenditures—specifically targeting overseas tourism, destination weddings, and non-essential gold imports—to insulate the economy from ongoing global volatility.
Delivering a video message from Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday, the Prime Minister framed domestic spending as a fundamental duty, urging the nation of 1.4 billion people to channel their capital back into the country under the banner of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) and Swadeshi.
Economic Sovereignty Amid Global Turbulence
The Prime Minister’s economic address followed official data confirming that India’s economy expanded by 7.8% in the April–June quarter of Fiscal Year 2027. The robust performance outpaced major market estimates, demonstrating remarkable structural stability despite severe global headwinds, including supply chain disruptions and geopolitical instability linked to the war in Iran.
“The world is drowned in war. There is news of war all around. The world is surrounded by crises. The supply chain is completely disturbed. From the Covid era in 2020 till today, stability is not visible anywhere. Despite that, India is progressing at a fast pace,” PM Modi declared, attributing the economic momentum to the collective strength of the nation.
The Three-Pronged Capital Protection Strategy
To cushion the national economy against international shocks and reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves, PM Modi outlined concrete behavioral changes for citizens:
-
Wed in India: Moving away from lavish foreign destination weddings in favor of domestic venues to support local hospitality, service providers, and event management sectors.
-
Domestic Tourism First: Re-routing leisure travel from overseas locations to domestic destinations to retain wealth within national borders.
-
Precious Metal Prudence: Halting non-essential gold purchases to prevent unnecessary capital outflow and trade deficit expansion.
The Prime Minister previously signaled similar measures earlier this year, urging citizens to embrace remote work where possible, cut fuel consumption, switch to electric vehicles, and prioritize Made in India products.
The Road to ‘Viksit Bharat’ 2047
Reiterating his administration’s long-term vision, PM Modi stated that economic self-reliance is the central pillar for transforming India into a fully developed nation (Viksit Bharat) by its independence centenary in 2047.
By prioritizing local products and services, the Prime Minister emphasized that citizens directly contribute to shielding the macroeconomic baseline from external spillovers while guaranteeing long-term opportunities for the nation’s youth.
