DEHRADUN – The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is making rapid progress on a 12 km Greenfield four-lane bypass designed to divert transit traffic away from the heart of Dehradun. With an investment of ₹716 crore, the project has already achieved 44% physical progress and is slated for completion by April 2027.

    Strategic Route & Connectivity

The bypass acts as a crucial link to the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, creating a south-western alternate route for commuters.

    • Alignment: Starts at Jhajhra, connects the Paonta Sahib-Ballupur section of NH-7, and concludes near the Asharori Check Post.

    • Inter-State Impact: It will streamline travel to industrial and northern hubs including Selaqui, Vikasnagar, and Herbertpur in Uttarakhand, as well as Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh.

    • Tourism Boost: The bypass will offer smoother access to popular destinations like Mussoorie, reducing travel time for tourists.

    Sustainable Engineering & Wildlife Safety

Given the sensitive forest terrain, NHAI has adopted several eco-friendly measures to balance infrastructure with ecological preservation:

    • Optimized Footprint: The Right of Way (ROW) has been narrowed to 30 meters (down from the standard 60m) to save forest cover.

    • Wildlife Corridors: A 350-meter-long Vehicular Over Pass (VOP) and a dedicated Cattle Over Pass (COP) are being built to ensure safe animal migration.

    • Fauna Crossings: The project includes seven minor bridges, 21 box culverts, and specialized Hume Pipe culverts for reptiles and smaller animals.

    Safety & Urban Relief

Designed for speeds up to 100 kmph (with 80 kmph limits in forest zones), the highway will feature continuous fencing to prevent human-wildlife conflict. For the residents of Dehradun, the bypass promises a significant reduction in heavy vehicle traffic, leading to lower noise levels, reduced vehicular pollution, and improved urban mobility.
