NEW DELHI – In a landmark move for India’s technological sovereignty, the Government has officially notified the country’s first semiconductor fabrication plant. The facility, to be operated by Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited, will be established within a dedicated Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Dholera, Gujarat.

The notification follows a series of strategic reforms to the SEZ Rules, 2006, aimed at positioning India as a global semiconductor hub by easing land requirements and operational norms for high-capital investments.

    Project Highlights: Tata’s AI-Enabled Fab

The Dholera facility represents the pinnacle of India’s current semiconductor ambitions, focusing on cutting-edge manufacturing:

    • Investment: A massive ₹91,000 crore.

    • Land Area: Spanning 66.166 hectares.

    • Employment: Poised to generate 21,000 jobs (direct and indirect).

    • Focus: An AI-enabled semiconductor fabrication facility designed for electronic hardware, software, and ITES.

    The Growing Semiconductor Ecosystem

The Tata project is part of a broader wave of approvals triggered by the regulatory easing in June 2025. Other major semiconductor and electronics SEZs notified recently include:

Entity Location Type of Operation Investment
Micron Semiconductor Sanand, Gujarat Assembly, Testing & Packaging ₹13,000 Cr
CG Semi Pvt. Ltd. Sanand, Gujarat Outsourced Assembly & Testing (OSAT) ₹2,150 Cr
Kaynes Semicon Sanand, Gujarat Outsourced Assembly & Testing (OSAT) ₹681 Cr
Aequs Group Dharwad, Karnataka Electronic Components Manufacturing ₹100 Cr

    Policy Catalysts

The government credited the success of these notifications to key amendments made on June 3, 2025, which reduced the minimum land requirement for such units from 50 to 10 hectares and introduced flexibility in domestic sales and foreign exchange calculations.

These initiatives are expected to significantly reduce India’s import dependence, foster high-skilled employment, and create resilient, future-ready manufacturing clusters that strengthen the domestic value chain for electronic components.
