New Delhi | July 31, 2026
The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, is set to observe World Breastfeeding Week 2026 nationwide from August 1 to August 7, 2026.
Centered around the official theme—“Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works”—the week-long campaign aims to drive awareness among families, communities, and healthcare providers regarding critical infant and young child feeding practices.
Core Campaign Objectives & Guidelines
The ministry’s nationwide outreach emphasizes foundational milestones for newborn survival, cognitive growth, and long-term health:
-
The Golden Hour: Urging families to ensure every newborn receives breast milk within the first hour of birth. The first milk (colostrum)—frequently termed a baby’s natural vaccine—is rich in essential antibodies and must be preserved rather than discarded.
-
Exclusive Breastfeeding (First 6 Months): Advocating strict exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, requiring no water, honey, glucose, or formula, as breast milk entirely fulfills an infant’s nutritional and hydration requirements.
-
Continued Feeding & Complementary Care: Encouraging the introduction of appropriate complementary foods after six months while maintaining breastfeeding up to two years and beyond.
-
Maternal Health Benefits: Highlighting how breastfeeding supports accelerated postpartum recovery while lowering the long-term risk of breast and ovarian cancers, type-2 diabetes, and postpartum depression.
