AGARTALA: Aiming to revolutionize India’s frontline defenses, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the Centre’s ambitious Smart Border framework is now in its final planning stage. The tech-heavy initiative will soon be deployed via pilot projects across critical international boundaries, focusing heavily on vulnerable sectors patrolled by the Border Security Force (BSF).

While addressing jawans at the Lankamura Border Outpost on the India-Bangladesh frontier, Shah made it clear that old-school border guarding is no longer enough to stop modern adversaries. He emphasized that Indian forces are now confronting a complex web of threats, including drone-based smuggling, narcotics trafficking, counterfeit currency networks, and human trafficking.

“Our objective is to build a technology-driven security architecture capable of detecting and preventing every form of cross-border crime,” Shah stated, noting that every frontier demands a custom, specialized response.

A Unified Shield: Security Beyond the BSF

The insights gathered from these upcoming high-tech pilots will serve as the foundation for a comprehensive nationwide border management model. A key highlight of this strategy is its cooperative nature: the Centre plans to weave district administrations, local police forces, and border-area communities directly into a single, coordinated security net.

Turning his focus to Tripura’s vital 856 km international border with Bangladesh, the Home Minister guaranteed aggressive infrastructure upgrades. Out of roughly 650 kilometers of aging fencing that has outlived its lifespan, the government has cleared the immediate replacement of 119 kilometers with upgraded, high-security structures.

Shah directly connected these defense upgrades to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of a developed India by 2047, emphasizing that economic prosperity relies entirely on a highly secure environment.

Massive Greening Drive and Infrastructure Boost

The security briefing coincided with World Environment Day, where Shah advocated for ecological balance. He revealed that Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel have planted an impressive 6.4 crore saplings since 2019, setting a fresh target to plant over two crore more next year. Showing immediate action, Shah planted an agarwood sapling at the venue, virtually inaugurated brand new BSF accommodation units, and laid foundation stones for future projects.

Shah opened his address by honoring Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar (‘Guruji’), the second Sarsanghchalak of the RSS, on his death anniversary, praising his lasting impact on national unity. The event was closely attended by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha alongside high-ranking defense, intelligence, and border management officials.
