The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has affirmed in the Lok Sabha that India’s E20 (20% Ethanol Blended Petrol) rollout is backed by comprehensive scientific validation, rigorous laboratory testing, and extensive stakeholder consultations across the automotive and energy sectors.

Responding to a written query in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Shri Suresh Gopi highlighted that testing agencies—including the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM)—conducted multi-parameter field trials before introducing higher blends nationwide.

Key operational data and findings presented in Parliament include:

    • Real-World Experience: E15+ blends have been in widespread commercial use for over 3.5 years, and E20 blends for over 2.5 years. Over 20 crore two-wheelers and 3 crore petrol cars currently operate on these blends daily across India.

    • Legacy Vehicle Performance: Servicing data from leading OEMs—including 2.84 crore vehicles serviced in FY 2025–26—reported no verified evidence of widespread engine failure, abnormal component wear, or ethanol-induced corrosion.

    • Engine & Efficiency Benefits: According to SIAM and ARAI, ethanol’s higher octane rating supports modern high-compression engines, enhancing combustion efficiency, ride quality, and acceleration while lowering carbon emissions.

    • Warranty Integrity: Automobile manufacturers continue to honor standard vehicle warranty obligations for models operating on E20 fuel.
