‘When Will You Grow Up?’: BJP Fires Back After Rahul Gandhi Mocks PM Modi’s Diplomacy

NEW DELHI — A fierce political row erupted after Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy approach, alleging that the government reduces complex international relations to public embraces.

Speaking at the Rachnatmak Congress National Convention, Gandhi used a stage demonstration with party colleague Sandeep Dikshit to mock the Prime Minister’s diplomatic style. The incident triggered a sharp, multi-front offensive from senior ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ministers, who accused Gandhi of lowering the decorum of his constitutional post.

The Convention Incident and Foreign Policy Criticisms

During his address, Gandhi argued that foreign policy under PM Modi lacks strategic depth and has been reduced to physical gestures.

“I don’t know where he got this idea from. Strange ideas get into people’s heads. He thinks this is foreign policy,” Gandhi remarked, stretching out his arms on stage to embrace Dikshit as a visual punchline.

The exchange escalated when Dikshit made a snide remark referencing Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, to which Gandhi responded in kind. Expanding on his critique, Gandhi termed the BJP-RSS leadership a “bunch of jokers” and claimed India had failed to leverage its global standing in key geopolitical developments.

Ministerial Pushback and Charges of Immaturity

The remarks drew immediate, synchronized condemnation from top cabinet members and party representatives:

    • Pralhad Joshi: The Union Education Minister slammed Gandhi’s comments, questioning his political maturity: “Rahul Gandhi, when will you grow up? Running India requires mature leadership, not amateur dramatics. Calling a democratically elected government ‘jokers and clowns’ proves you are out of your depth.” He added that attacking an elected leader insults the voters who chose him.

    • Giriraj Singh: The Union Minister described Gandhi’s conduct as “mentally frustrated” and crossing the boundaries of political decency.

    • Bansuri Swaraj: The BJP MP noted that the nation expects a constructive opposition rather than leadership that resorts to “cheap rhetoric for social media memes.”

    • Sukanta Majumdar: The Union Minister called the jokes targeting foreign dignitaries and the Prime Minister a “new low in public discourse.”

The exchange underscores the growing acrimony between the government and the opposition, with the BJP asserting that personal attacks and onstage antics undermine India’s international standing and parliamentary culture.
