BHADERWAH (J&K): Marking a significant milestone in India’s technology-led rural StartUp movement, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh officially inaugurated the two-day 4th Lavender Festival 2026 in the picturesque valley of Bhaderwah. Organized by the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), Jammu, under the theme “Lavender Goes Global,” the festival celebrates the spectacular transformation of this remote Himalayan town into the epicentre of India’s multi-million-rupee aroma industry.
“Lavender has given the small J&K town of Bhaderwah a national identity and a national role in India’s economic growth,” stated Dr. Jitendra Singh. “What was once considered a remote hill town has today emerged as a beacon of India’s rural agricultural entrepreneurship.”
The Scale of the Purple Revolution
The success of the CSIR Aroma Mission, heavily backed by the central government’s Startup India vision, has turned traditional agriculture on its head in mountainous terrains. Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, Director of CSIR-IIIM, presented the remarkable growth metrics achieved across the first three phases of the project:

Land Expansion: Lavender cultivation has aggressively scaled up to cover nearly 1,500 hectares of land.

Grassroots Impact: More than 4,500 farming families are now directly benefiting from the cash crop.

Yield & Revenue: The initiative has yielded over 4,000 kilograms of high-value lavender oil, driving cumulative revenues past the ₹18 crore mark and substantially boosting rural household incomes.
The Global Blueprint: What began as a modest pilot project in Jammu & Kashmir has proved highly scalable. Dr. Jitendra Singh revealed that Bhaderwah’s lavender cultivation model is now being actively replicated in other hilly regions, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and various North-Eastern states.
Bridging Laboratories and Rural Livelihoods
Addressing the gathering, Director General of CSIR, Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, and Professor V.K. Singh (IIT Kanpur/Chairman CSIR-RAB) lauded the Purple Revolution as India’s finest example of translating elite laboratory research into sustainable livelihood opportunities at the grassroots level.
The festival grounds featured dozens of high-traffic stalls showcasing a wide array of commercially successful spin-off products developed by regional startups. These included therapeutic lavender oils, premium perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, incense products, and specialized herbal formulations. The event also featured the signing of new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), the launch of advanced lavender-based product lines, and the felicitation of pioneering local farmers who transitioned away from low-yield traditional crops.
Infrastructure Driving the Aroma Economy
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that scientific innovation goes hand-in-hand with physical connectivity. He highlighted the ongoing engineering works on National Highway-244, stating that the massive upgrade to the highway network is systematically transforming the socio-economic landscape of the Doda region, allowing local aroma entrepreneurs to seamlessly transport goods to global markets.
The high-profile inauguration was attended by notable figures, including former cricketer and BCCI President Mithun Manhas (who joined as the Guest of Honour), MLA Bhaderwah Daleep Singh Parihar, MLA Doda West Shakti Raj Parihar, Deputy Commissioner Doda Krishan Lal, alongside premier scientists and directors from major national labs like CSIR-IICT and CSIR-NBRI.
