NEW DELHI — In a direct intervention amid ongoing unrest, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has written to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, requesting him to personally meet with student groups protesting alleged irregularities in the state’s recruitment examinations.
Gandhi’s letter came as the demonstrations entered their 24th consecutive day, highlighting growing pressure on the ruling JMM-Congress alliance in Jharkhand to address concerns surrounding competitive exams conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
Key Points of Gandhi’s Appeal
-
Constitutional Right to Protest: Expressing solidarity with the job aspirants, Gandhi reiterated that the Congress party views the right to peaceful protest as a fundamental pillar of Indian democracy.
-
Legitimate Demands: The Congress MP characterized the students’ grievances regarding exam paper leaks and systemic irregularities as legitimate, urging the state leadership to reinforce its commitment to resolving them.
-
Direct Dialogue Recommended: While acknowledging that a state-appointed committee had held preliminary talks with student representatives, Gandhi suggested that direct outreach by Chief Minister Soren would help address remaining concerns and restore confidence among youth.
Background of the Agitation
The student agitation has escalated across Jharkhand, with protesters demanding an independent Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into recruitment process flaws and the cancellation of compromised examinations.
While state authorities have conducted raids and made arrests through the Jharkhand Crime Investigation Department (CID), student bodies have maintained their demonstrations, with several representatives taking part in hunger strikes.
The state government has invited student leaders for further rounds of talks to find a resolution.
