Opposition MPs Protest in Parliament Complex Over “Empty Cylinders, Empty Promises” LPG Supply Crunch

NEW DELHI — Leading members of India’s opposition parties staged a high-profile protest in the Parliament House complex on Wednesday morning to highlight a growing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply shortage affecting domestic and commercial sectors.

Gathering near the Makar Dwar, prominent leaders including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, NCP(SP)’s Supriya Sule, and SP’s Dharmendra Yadav held a massive banner titled ‘Empty Cylinders, Empty Promises’ while raising slogans against the government. The protest reflected widespread concern over increasing wait times and delivery delays for cooking gas cylinders across the country.

    Geopolitical Context and Government Strategy

The reported supply crunch stems directly from the evolving conflict in West Asia, which has disrupted global energy corridors. In response, the government has prioritized the allocation of domestically produced natural gas for the essential services sector:

    • LPG Production: Ensuring uninterrupted supply for residential cooking gas.

    • Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): Stabilizing supply for public and private transportation.

    • Piped Natural Gas (PNG): Maintaining distribution for the piped cooking gas sector.

    Strategic Adjustments

The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has intensified efforts to streamline gas distribution. The government is fast-tracking key city gas distribution projects to bridge supply gaps and increasing allocations of commercial LPG. These measures are intended to ease distribution pressures amid a complex geopolitical environment that is challenging energy security.
