GOA – Marking a major milestone in India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, the first of eleven Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs), named ‘Shachi’ (Yard 1280), was launched at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on March 31, 2026.

The vessel was launched by Mrs. Shagun Sobti in the presence of Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, following full naval traditions and attended by top officials from the Ministry of Defence.

    Strategic Capabilities of ‘Shachi’

Derived from Indian mythology, the name ‘Shachi’ translates to “one who renders assistance.” These advanced vessels are designed to bolster the Navy’s fleet in several critical areas:

    • Multi-Domain Operations: Enhancing surveillance, anti-piracy missions, and search and rescue (SAR) capabilities.

    • Asset Protection: Safeguarding India’s offshore energy assets and exclusive economic zones.

    • Humanitarian Aid: Purpose-built for HADR (Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief) operations across the Indian Ocean Region.

A Landmark for ‘Make in India’

The NGOPV project is being executed concurrently at two premier shipyards: GSL in Goa and GRSE in Kolkata.

    • Symbolism: The ship’s crest features the Ursa Major constellation alongside a red and white lighthouse, symbolizing guidance and constant vigilance.

    • Aatmanirbhar Bharat: The launch underscores the government’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing, reducing dependence on foreign platforms while modernizing the naval fleet.

These next-generation ships will eventually join the existing fleet of ten OPVs, significantly expanding the Indian Navy’s reach and response time for maritime security and coastal defense.
