NEW DELHI – Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has voiced concerns regarding the government’s plan to amend the women’s reservation law, cautioning that the move should not be utilized as a political instrument to undermine federalism.
Speaking ahead of a special three-day Parliament session, Tharoor alleged that the timing of the amendments is aimed at gaining political mileage before upcoming state elections and the 2029 general elections. While asserting the Congress party’s commitment to a one-third reservation for women, he emphasized that the implementation must be “inclusive and fair.”
The Thiruvananthapuram MP further criticized the government’s approach, suggesting that linking the reservation to future delimitation exercises could “vitiate the vitality” of Parliament. His remarks highlight a growing debate over the mechanical and political nuances of the historic legislation as the nation prepares for its eventual rollout in 2029.
