GANGTOK — Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Sikkim today for a landmark two-day visit to mark the 50th anniversary of Sikkim’s Statehood. The visit is headlined by the inauguration and foundation-laying of multiple projects worth over ₹4,000 crore, touching every corner of the Himalayan state.
The Prime Minister’s itinerary blends a celebration of Sikkim’s unique ecological heritage with a massive push for modern infrastructure and traditional healthcare.
Day 1: Ecological Focus
The PM arrives in Gangtok at 3 PM today. His first major engagement on Tuesday morning will be a visit to the Orchidarium and the newly developed Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park. This world-class “Orchid Experience Centre” is designed to showcase the state’s world-renowned floral diversity to global tourists.
Day 2: The ₹4,000 Crore Blueprint
At Paljor Stadium, the PM will lead the closing ceremony of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. Key projects to be launched include:

Education Hub: Inauguration of the Sikkim University permanent campus at Yangang, the Helen Lepcha Medical College, and IT infrastructure for 160 schools.

Healthcare Integration: Foundation stone for a 100-bedded Ayurveda Hospital in Namchi and the inauguration of an Integrated Sowa Rigpa Hospital at NIT Deorali.

Infrastructure & Power: Two new steel arch bridges over the Teesta River to link Namchi and Gangtok, along with a total revamping of Gangtok’s power distribution network.

Agriculture & Tourism: Opening of the Sikkim IFFCO Processing Plant to boost organic farming and the redevelopment of the Ridge Precinct for tourism.
A Milestone for the Northeast
The visit underscores the “Act East” policy, focusing on “inclusive and holistic” development. From Mini Secretariats at Lumsey to sewerage rehabilitation for river pollution abatement in Singtam, the projects reflect a shift toward high-tech urban planning in the mountains.
