NEW DELHI – The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has reached a major milestone in modernizing electronic toll collection with the successful launch of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system. The first-of-its-kind system was implemented at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat–Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat, recording approximately 41,500 vehicles on its first day of operation.
Seamless, Barrier-Less Travel
The MLFF system represents a paradigm shift in highway travel by introducing a completely barrier-less environment. Key features and benefits include:
-
Advanced Technology: The system utilizes Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag-based electronic collection to enable contactless operations.
-
Seamless Flow: Vehicles can pass through toll locations without stopping, ensuring uninterrupted traffic movement.
-
Environmental Impact: The technology is expected to significantly reduce congestion, improve travel times, enhance fuel efficiency, and lower vehicular emissions.
-
Operational Transparency: The framework reduces the operational costs of setting up traditional plazas while enhancing transparency in tolling.
Payment Compliance and E-Notices
NHAI has urged commuters to maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag accounts to ensure a smooth transition. New protocols for non-payment include:
-
E-Notice Issuance: Users with insufficient balance or non-functional FASTags will receive an Electronic Notice (E-Notice).
-
Payment Window: The normal user fee must be paid via the designated portal within 72 hours of the notice.
-
Penalties: Failure to comply within 72 hours will result in a fee charged at twice the normal rate for the vehicle category.
-
Enforcement: Unresolved notices may lead to the blacklisting of FASTags and restrictions on vehicle-related services through the VAHAN platform.
This initiative marks the beginning of a more robust and cost-effective tolling ecosystem designed to enhance the overall experience for National Highway users.
