SOMNATH, GUJARAT – Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the holy Somnath Temple today to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the rebuilt shrine’s inauguration, describing the event as a monumental milestone in India’s civilisational journey.
The Prime Minister’s visit coincides with the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav, a celebration marking seven and a half decades since the temple opened its doors to devotees following its reconstruction after independence.
A Divine Experience
Expressing deep emotion, the Prime Minister shared that arriving at the shrine on this historic anniversary was a “divine experience.” He noted that the atmosphere of devotion (Bhakti) was palpable in every corner of the temple complex.
“Feeling blessed to be here… That day was indeed a milestone in the civilisational journey of Bharat,” the Prime Minister posted on X, reflecting on the historical weight of the occasion.
Echoes of History: Recalling Dr. Rajendra Prasad
In a poignant reflection, Shri Modi stated that he felt he was reliving the very moment experienced by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who inaugurated the rebuilt temple in 1951. He emphasized that the journey of Somnath—from destruction to its current glory—mirrors the enduring spirit and “undiminished energy” of the nation.
The People’s Devotion
The Prime Minister expressed being “overwhelmed and emotional” by the massive crowds and the “tremendous enthusiasm” of the pilgrims lining the path to the temple. He highlighted that the gathering of countless people to celebrate the 75th anniversary is a testament to the temple’s central place in the hearts of Indians.
The visit reaffirms the government’s focus on cultural heritage, with the Prime Minister noting that the vibrant spiritual atmosphere of the Amrut Mahotsav is infusing “amazing energy” across the country.
