NEW DELHI – On the 75th anniversary of the inauguration of the reconstructed Somnath Temple, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shared a deeply personal and historical OpEd reflecting on the temple’s role as a beacon of Indian civilization. The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the holy site on May 11, 2026.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister emphasized that May 11 remains a milestone in India’s journey, representing the restoration of its cultural pride and the resilience of its people.
Honoring Generations of Resilience
In his OpEd, titled “Somnath and Bharat’s Unconquerable Spirit,” the Prime Minister paid a moving tribute to the countless individuals who stood as guardians of the shrine through centuries of upheaval.
“Wrote an OpEd about my forthcoming visit to Somnath on 11th May and why this day will always be important with respect to Somnath and the greatness of our civilisation. Also paid homage to each and every person who endured all sorts of challenges yet always protected Somnath and restored its glory.”
The Prime Minister highlighted that the temple is not merely a place of worship but a testament to a civilization that refuses to be erased. He noted that the history of Somnath is a history of struggle, survival, and ultimate triumph.
Celebrating 75 Years of Restoration
The visit marks the 75th anniversary of the temple’s dedication to the nation in 1951—a project spearheaded by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and inaugurated by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
Key Themes of the OpEd:
-
The Power of Devotion: How faith acted as a unifying force for the nation during its most difficult eras.
-
Civilizational Continuity: The temple’s reconstruction as a symbol of a “New India” reclaiming its heritage.
-
A Call to Service: Reminding citizens that the protection of cultural landmarks is a collective responsibility for future generations.
A Pilgrimage of Gratitude
Writing in Hindi, the Prime Minister expressed his personal connection to the Dham, stating:
“I will have the privilege of visiting once again on May 11 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the reconstructed Somnath Temple. This occasion reminds us how generations continued to struggle for the protection and reconstruction of this holy place.”
As the Chairman of the Shree Somnath Trust, PM Modi has overseen significant infrastructural upgrades at the site in recent years, including the development of the Promenade and the upcoming Somnath Exhibition Centre, ensuring that the ancient site remains accessible and inspiring for modern pilgrims.
