New Delhi | April 11, 2026 — State-run power giant NTPC Limited has announced that the fourth and final unit of the Tehri Pumped Storage Project (PSP) will officially commence commercial operations at midnight on April 12, 2026. The milestone was confirmed via regulatory filings to the BSE and NSE today.
Completion of Tehri PSP
The commissioning of the 250 MW Unit IV by THDC India Limited (an NTPC subsidiary) completes the 1,000 MW pumped storage facility ( MW). This project is a critical asset for India’s national grid, designed to:
-
Balance Renewable Energy: Storing excess power during off-peak hours and releasing it during high demand.
-
Peak Power Management: Providing rapid-response electricity to stabilize the grid.
-
Enhance Flexibility: Improving the resilience of the power infrastructure as more variable green energy is integrated.
Impact on NTPC & THDC Capacity
With this final unit becoming operational, the generation profiles for both the subsidiary and the parent group have seen a significant boost:
The commercial capacity of the NTPC Group now stands at 88,298 MW, bringing the corporation closer to its medium-term goal of surpassing the 90 GW mark.
Strategic Significance
The Tehri PSP is one of India’s largest pumped storage plants, utilizing the existing Tehri and Koteshwar reservoirs. Its completion marks a major step forward in India’s energy transition, providing the “megabattery” effect needed to support the country’s growing reliance on solar and wind power.
The successful operation was verified by Company Secretaries Ritu Arora (NTPC) and Rashmi Sharma (THDC).
