NEW DELHI — Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has submitted a formal dissent against the proceedings to appoint the next CBI Director. The high-powered selection committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and including Chief Justice Surya Kant, met to find a successor for Praveen Sood, who transitions out of the role on May 24.
Dissent Over Process and Transparency
In a detailed two-page note, Gandhi argued that the selection has been reduced to a “mere formality”:
-
Withholding Data: Gandhi claimed he was not given access to vital self-appraisal and 360-degree reports for the 69 candidates under review.
-
Role of the LoP: He asserted that the Leader of Opposition should not be treated as a “rubber stamp” for a pre-decided candidate.
-
Political Misuse: The note alleged that the government continues to use the agency to target journalists, critics, and political rivals.
Potential Candidates
While a final choice has not been officially declared following the hour-long meeting at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, the following senior IPS officers are reportedly in the running:
-
Parag Jain
-
Shatrujeet Kapoor
-
Yogesh Gupta
-
G P Singh
-
Praveer Ranjan
An official announcement regarding the appointment is expected in the near future.
