SHILLONG: In a significant push for regional development and national security, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is presiding over the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) today in Meghalaya’s capital. The high-profile summit serves as a central administrative forum to review development metrics, enhance inter-state coordination, and expedite critical milestones across the northeastern states.
Following the session, the Home Minister will transition to Tripura to lead an exhaustive security audit along the strategic international frontier.
Multi-Sectoral Evaluation at the 73rd NEC Plenary
The plenary session brings together top-tier leadership to finalize strategies across a broad spectrum of regional priorities. The comprehensive agenda targets several pivotal focus areas:
-
Connectivity & Infrastructure: Special presentations and reviews detailing the expansion of regional infrastructure networks and the acceleration of economic corridor development.
-
Agrarian & Allied Self-Reliance: Formulating precise action plans to boost investment promotion, tourism, agriculture, horticulture, and the handloom and handicrafts sectors. A core objective of the discussions includes achieving full self-sufficiency in dairy (milk), poultry (eggs), fisheries, and meat production.
-
Sports & Talent Promotion: Designing initiatives to upgrade sports infrastructure and foster athletic talent across the northeastern states.
According to the Ministry of Development of North-East Region (DoNER), a key component of the conclave involves assessing the targeted advancements achieved by the high-level task forces constituted under the region’s Chief Ministers to manage critical development sectors.
High-Level Delegation in Attendance
The summit features a prominent gathering of central and state leadership, including:
-
Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister for DoNER
-
Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for DoNER
-
The Governors and Chief Ministers of all eight Northeastern states
-
Appointed members of the NEC alongside senior bureaucrats representing both central and state governments.
Tripura Frontier Visit: Comprehensive Border Security Audit
Upon the conclusion of the NEC proceedings in Shillong, the Home Minister will travel to Tripura to directly review border enforcement and infrastructure projects along the India-Bangladesh frontier. Tripura’s geography—sharing an extensive 856-km international border and bounded on three sides by the neighboring nation—makes border management a crucial element of national security.
-
Operational Review: The Home Minister will lead a high-level security meeting featuring top commanders from the Border Security Force (BSF) and allied security intelligence agencies to analyze real-time operational readiness and border management protocols.
-
Mitigating Trans-Border Threats: The security deliberations are expected to specifically target challenges such as illegal migration, cross-border smuggling, illicit trade, and trans-border crimes.
-
Personnel Interaction: The itinerary features a scheduled Sainik Sammelan, allowing the Home Minister to interact directly with deployed security personnel, alongside his participation in a localized tree plantation initiative.
Infrastructure Foundations and Joint Ventures
In tandem with the security audit, the visit will catalyze infrastructure and commercial growth in the state. Amit Shah is scheduled to launch and lay the foundation stones for multiple developmental projects. Notably, he will lead the bhoomi pujan (groundbreaking ceremony) for a premier hotel project being jointly developed through a collaborative partnership between the Government of Tripura and a private enterprise.
