MUMBAI — Under India’s 2026 chairship, the Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting concluded in Mumbai following four days of high-level talks focused on restructuring the global natural diamond industry.
As the world’s leading hub for cutting and polishing diamonds, India anchored the summit around three core pillars: Credibility, Compliance, and Consumer Confidence (the 3Cs), aiming to modernize trade transparency amid changing market demands.
Key Highlights:
-
The Vision: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal emphasized that India is committed to keeping natural diamonds a symbol of trust, noting that the sector sustains millions of livelihoods globally across producing, processing, and consuming nations.
-
The Core Focus: Led by KP Chair 2026 Mr. Suchindra Misra, specialized working groups held intensive sessions targeting technical processes, statistics, artisanal production, and strict monitoring to secure responsible sourcing across the supply chain.
-
Tripartite Strengths: The conference utilized the KP’s unique consensus-based framework, uniting governments, the World Diamond Council, and civil society coalition members under one umbrella.
-
Consumer Outreach: Delegates prioritized new communication strategies to highlight the positive developmental and economic impacts of conflict-free diamonds to everyday shoppers.
The decisions and frameworks established during the Mumbai sessions will be advanced at the upcoming KP Plenary, scheduled to take place in New Delhi later this year.
