NEW DELHI — In a major step toward scaling up indigenous train protection technology, the Ministry of Railways has approved ₹170 crore for installing Kavach Version 4.0 across the remaining 712 Route Kilometres (Rkm) of the Moradabad Division under Northern Railway.
The project will upgrade signalling infrastructure and establish advanced automated train controls to prevent collisions and operational mishaps across key rail corridors in the region.
Project Scope & Key Highlights
-
Investment Allocation: ₹170 crore sanctioned by the Ministry of Railways.
-
Coverage Area: 712 Route Kilometres (Rkm) across remaining sections of Moradabad Division.
-
Technology Standard: Indigenous Kavach 4.0 Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.
-
Executing Zone: Northern Railway (Moradabad Division).
Safety Mechanism and Capabilities of Kavach 4.0
The indigenously engineered Kavach system acts as an electronic guardian to mitigate human error and adverse track conditions:
-
Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD): Automatically overrides driver errors if a train overshoots a restrictive signal.
-
Automated Braking: Triggers emergency braking systems when an impending collision or unsafe condition is detected.
-
Speed Regulation: Automatically enforces strict speed limits on speed-restricted curves, crossovers, and heavy weather zones.
-
Collision Prevention: Prevents head-on and rear-end collisions through continuous radio-frequency communication between locomotives, stations, and trackside equipment.
The approval aligns with Indian Railways’ broader objective of accelerating the rollout of Kavach 4.0 across high-density routes to achieve network-wide automated safety coverage.
