CHENNAI — The Madras High Court has declined to grant an immediate ban on the screening of the spy thriller Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh. The request was made by an advocate citing concerns over the film’s potential impact on the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Advocate Sheela made an urgent mention before the bench of Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan on Monday, arguing that the film contains “biased political commentary” that could influence voters while the Model Code of Conduct is in effect. The state is scheduled to go to the polls on April 23, 2026.

    Court’s Observation

    • No Formal Plea: The bench noted that while an urgent mention was made, a formal petition had not yet been filed.

    • Already Released: The court pointed out that the movie had already hit theaters worldwide on March 19 and has been performing exceptionally well at the box office.

    • Next Steps: The judges directed the lawyer to file a proper petition before the court would consider hearing the matter further.

    About the Film

Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film is a high-stakes sequel to the 2025 blockbuster Dhurandhar. It features an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal. The movie has already sparked significant debate for its overt political themes and depiction of real-world geopolitical events.
