NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded a high-powered diplomatic offensive on Sunday, engaging key leaders from South Africa, the Philippines, Egypt, and across the developing world on the margins of the BRICS summit. The diplomatic marathon signaled India’s intent to aggressively scale up trade corridors, secure supply chains in critical minerals, and export its homegrown tech stack.

Diplomatic sources confirmed that talks pivoted around concrete deliverables in defense technology, critical infrastructure, digital architecture, and energy security.

Tech, Minerals, and Security: Priority Partnerships

The headline engagement saw PM Modi meet South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to chart a roadmap for critical economic supply chains. The dialog targeted joint initiatives in mining and critical minerals, food security, infrastructure development, and digital public infrastructure (DPI). Grounding the strategic partnership in shared historical ties, New Delhi also extended an invitation for South Africa to enter the International Big Cat Alliance, building on their existing wildlife conservation pacts.

Concurrently, talks with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. zeroed in on economic integration and maritime security. The agenda spanned defense collaboration, railway infrastructure, fintech solutions, space technology, and innovation, while reinforcing India’s broader geopolitical footprint within ASEAN.

Central Asia and Middle East Dialogues

On the regional security front, PM Modi held targeted discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, assessing expanding bilateral economic cooperation alongside strategic developments across North Africa and the Middle East.

Turning to Central Asia, discussions with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev prioritized injecting fresh energy into strategic ties. Both sides identified immediate opportunities in energy trade, logistical connectivity, cross-border technology transfers, and industrial innovation.

Consolidation Across Africa and Southeast Asia

Consolidating the strategic momentum generated by the African Union’s integration into the G20, PM Modi conducted bilateral sessions with top leadership across Africa:

    • Burundi: In talks with President Evariste Ndayishimiye, incoming chair of the African Union, discussions centered on agriculture, clean energy transition, youth skilling programs, and developmental assistance.

    • Nigeria: Meeting Vice President Kashim Shettima, the focus turned to critical commodities and power generation—specifically fertilizers, clean energy infrastructure, defense, and healthcare.

    • Uganda: Discussions with Vice President Jessica Alupo prioritized targeted investment in healthcare systems, agricultural modernization, and digital framework implementation.

The Prime Minister also held bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, reaffirming a joint commitment to expand trade and maritime ties across the Indo-Pacific.

This multi-vector diplomatic drive underlines New Delhi’s calculated effort to leverage multilateral forums to fortify bilateral alliances, build resilient trade ecosystems, and lead the Global South toward an increasingly multipolar global structure.
